Jewish tradition points to the name of the month as symbolically appropriate--the letters of Elul form an acronym for the words in the verse Ani le‑dodi ve‑dodi li--"I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine" (Song of Songs 6:3). Believing that the "beloved" refers to God, the sages take this verse to describe the particularly loving and close relationship between God and Israel. Elul, then, is our time to establish this closeness so that we can approach the Yamim Noraim, or Days of Awe, in trusting acceptance of God's judgment. We approach the trial not out of fear, but out of love."

Tzadikim who left during Elul

Tzadikim who left during Elul: "it is good just to say the Name of a Tzadik. Of course the more one learns about each individual Tzadik strengthens ones connection to that Tzadik and assists in the Channel of connection between you and he/she. As we develop more information about a particular Tzadik his or her name will appear as a Link. Otherwise it will just be listed below the date.


One spiritual ritual recommended by Rabbi Nachtman of Breslov is to say the Names of the Tzadikim starting with Adam and Chava and continuing until today. This list will be added as a link when it is available. In the meantime try doing this ritual with the Names of all the Tzadikim who passed in an Hebrew month."

How have Jewish cultural traditions—food, music, humor, and intellectual inquiry—influenced the city of New York, the country, and the world at large? Come to The New School and find out. The Jewish Cultural Studies program explores Jewish cultural life, with a particular focus on secularism in Jewish communities and the contributions of Jewish thinkers to secular intellectual traditions.
